Making Sense of AI: Reimagining Computational Thinking in the Classroom

Generative AI is rapidly changing how students interact with digital tools and express ideas through computation. What happens when students can ask an AI to generate code, models, or creative artifacts? How can teachers design learning experiences that keep students thinking deeply, reasoning, and creating—not just prompting?

We are a team of researchers and educators from Teachers College, Columbia University, and Aarhus University, designing and studying tools for computational modeling, data science, and AI-supported learning. Our work connects coding, modeling, and data exploration while supporting teachers as designers of meaningful AI-integrated learning experiences.

In this hands-on workshop, educators will explore how AI can enrich their STEM classrooms, computational thinking, and modeling. Through examples from classroom-ready tools—such as MoDa, a block-based modeling environment; NetLogo; and CoTinker, a collaborative design platform—participants will engage in activities that combine coding, data, and computational modeling. Teachers will then work in small groups to redesign familiar classroom tasks (e.g., coding, data exploration, or modeling) to include AI while keeping students’ sensemaking and agency at the center. By the end, participants will leave with concrete ideas, classroom strategies, and a shared vocabulary for teaching with AI rather than about AI.

This workshop is designed for teachers and educators. We plan to make the framing more practice-oriented, emphasize classroom application, and use accessible, teacher-facing language (less theory, more “how this can look in my classroom”).
